Shabba Ranks was one of the artists Reggae Ragga Dance Hall's most popular before the arrival of Shaggy.

Biography


Shabba Ranks grew up in Trench Town, where he began as a twelve-year-old deejay for the Roots Melody sound system. There he took his first single, the heat under the feet of Sufferer, as the Co-Pilot by Josey Wales became aware of him.

He introduced Shabba Ranks with King Jammy, who produced several singles for Shabba Ranks. Shabba then moved to the label B producer Bobby Digital's Digital. During his time at Digital B, he had, among other things, through cooperation with Scritti Politti, the first success in the UK.

In 1991, he signed with Epic Records and released the album as raw as ever, who won the 1992 Grammy. In the same year he also released the song Dem Bow (album just reality), the rhythm of the reggaeton movement strongly influenced.

He won another Grammy in 1993 with his second album, X-Tra Naked. In addition, two collections of hits from his time entered the Jamaican charts.
A Mi Shabba The third album included some hit songs like Shine Eye Gal while, however, remained below expectations.


This led in 1996 to end cooperation with Epic. Since then, Shabba Ranks took several songs for Jamaican producers, especially on King Jammy.
In his career, Shabba Ranks has worked, among others, Maxi Priest, Johnny Gill, Chuck Berry, Mykal Rose and Cocoa Tea.

Controversy Homophobia


Like many other classes of dancehall artist Shabba under fire for homophobic lyrics, called Battyman-Tunes, and views in criticism. In 1992, he urged a British television show in the crucifixion of homosexuals. These statements later, he returned the pressure on his label, which led to the loss of popularity in Jamaica. They accused him of inconsistency there before.
